Intergenerational coresidence and contact: a longitudinal analysis of adult children's response to their mother's widowhood

Article Abstract:

A mother's widowhood status increases intergenerational contact and coresidence. A longitudinal analysis of the reactions of adult children to the widowhood of their mother analyzes the changes in mother-child relationship in terms of coresidence, proximity, and frequency of contact. The study demonstrates that a change in marital status impels an increase in the mother's contact with her adult children and also the possibility of her coresidence with them. However the distance between the adult children and their mothers remains unaffected by the father's death.

Coresidence beliefs in American society - 1973 to 1991

Article Abstract:

The desire of co-residence between adult children and their parents has risen in the US between 1973 and 1991. Despite the trend towards autonomous living, reports by the General Social Surveys show approval for coresidence. The idea of coresidence with the aged is more acceptable to younger cohorts rather than older cohorts because of the support they get from parents. This difference may be due to combined life-cycle and cohort factors. About 20% of the effects of birth year can be accounted for by greater kinship contact reported by younger cohorts.
