Racial differences in mother-child coresidence in the past
Article Abstract:
Mother-child coresidence norms in the past were weaker for African Americans than that for native-born European Americans. The social norms of mother-child coresidence in Western societies in Africa and the US were frequently violated in the past by European Americans and African Americans in crisis situations. African American mothers were more likely to send young children away from home even in non-crisis situations. Racial differences in contemporary family patterns in the US and West Africa is a continuity of past Western European and African family patterns.

Results show that among whites, African Americans and Latino, children's financial support to their parents are mainly driven by their desire to help, while parents' financial assistance to their children is an act of investment.
