Social sources of change in children's home environments: the effects of parental occupational experiences and family conditions
Article Abstract:
Assessments of data from the 1986 and 1988 mother-child supplements of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth on 1,403 mothers with three-to-six-year-old children revealed that factors such as birth of more children, marital failure and mothers remaining single had significant negative impacts on children's home environments. However, mother's enhanced employment status mitigated some of the negative effects, which hindered the ushering in of conducive home atmosphere for growing children.

Paternal absence and child behavior: does a child's gender make a difference?
Article Abstract:
A study examined the impact of paternal absence on the behavior of 482 white children between nine and eleven years of age in 1990. Particularly, this research focused on gender variations in longer and shorter term effects of a father's absence. Findings revealed more modest effects among girls than among boys although such gender differences are not significant. Moreover, results showed that boys and girls demonstrated similar responses to the presence of a new man in the home.
