Cohabitation versus marriage: a comparison of relationship quality
Article Abstract:
A study reveals the identical nature of cohabitation and marriage in terms of the relationship quality between partners. The marriage plans of cohabitors have a significant impact on their relationship quality and largely explains the qualitative differences between marrieds and cohabitors. Marrieds and cohabitors with marriage plans show similar reactions to factors that affect relationship quality, such as biological children, children from past unions, and prior union experience. In terms of relationship duration and demographic aspects, the relationship quality of marrieds scores on that of cohabitors.

Hitting without a license: testing explanations for differences in partner abuse between young adult daters and cohabitors
Article Abstract:
Partner abuse among 21-year-olds were studied and compared with different types of unmarried relationships. Fifteen variables were considered in the analysis, namely informal sanctions, deviant peers, religiosity, memberships, social support, age difference, balance of power, areas of conflict, shared time and activities, relationship duration, stressful events, education and prior aggression. Cohabitors were found to have higher incidences and degrees of partner violence. They were also found to differ from daters in terms of social involvement outside the relationship.
