Theorizing about family caregiving: the role of responsibility

Article Abstract:

The meaning ascribed to familial responsibility to older family members was examined by interviewing 43 members of 15 families. The results indicated that familial responsibility includes both accountability to other family members and responsibility to older people. There was also a high incidence of shared responsibility among family members. Moreover, assistance of children in task-oriented areas, such as home maintenance and transportation, is more probable than in areas that may jeopardize the self-confidence and independence of their parents.

Explanatory practice in family studies

Article Abstract:

Explanatory practice in family studies can be descriptive, conceptual or theoretical, depending on its context. Current explanatory practice favors theorizing over conceptual analysis and 'mere' description. Yet focused description can be an intentional explanation, while conceptual accounts also have explanatory potential. A major issue underlying explanatory practice in a field as diverse as family studies is how it can have both credibility and relevance.

Theorizing in family studies: Discovering process

Article Abstract:

Discovery is seen as a process where initial images required to guide further questioning take shape, in the case of family studies. Theorizing in family studies could be different if scholars asked the sorts of questions that are currently asked in the physical sciences. This is expanded by discussion on the problematics linked to the conceptualization of process in marriages and families.
