Deprivatization and the construction of domestic life
Article Abstract:
A constructionist approach to family studies that sees family as a social object created through interpretive practice is presented. According to this view, the family is constantly being constituted and does not have the outlines of a certain ideal. This approach can be linked to a broader theory of experience and interpretation in contemporary life, where family images and meanings such as unity and privacy are becoming a rationalized, public accomplishment. Since domestic life is increasingly interpreted by organizations and their agents, such as human service professionals, domesticity and the family are becoming more 'deprivatized.'

"They think you ain't much of nothing": the social construction of the welfare mother
Article Abstract:
Welfare mothers' conceptions of how their stigmatized status came into existence and why they are utilizing the welfare system were investigated by interviewing 47 women receiving welfare in 1995. Many of the respondents have the tendency to attribute their status to the social structure, the welfare system or to luck. They usually point out to popular and contemporary individualist and cultural views which put the blame on the victims to justify their dependence on the welfare system.
