Living Arrangements and Social Networks of Older Adults

Article Abstract:

The book "Living Arrangements and Social Networks of Older Adults" reports the results of a survey of the living arrangements and social networks of 4000 Dutch adults aged from 54 to 89. The book is a monograph offering valuable data on Dutch family structures and functions in the later period of life. It also offers a view of the social world of older adults, its predictors, and its influence on subjective well-being. A theoretically and empirically based context for conceptualizing family relationships is also presented. The book is a valuable referential work for family scholars.

Social capital and dropping out of school early

Article Abstract:

A study shows that social capital which is a measure of the levels of interaction between parents, schools and children, is an important factor in determining early drop out rates. Indicators of social capital, such as parent-children interaction patterns, the number of times the child changes schools, and attending a Catholic school can explain the early dropping out of school. Dropping out of school is significantly reduced with the reduction in school changes. However, social capital is unable to explain the effect of family structure on leaving school early.

Perception of adoption as social stigma: motivation for search and reunion

Article Abstract:

Social stigma directed against adoption varies in different societies. The government of US has made efforts to conceal the identity of children with unknown parentage. The adoptees are encouraged to ignore their biological background. Adopted children value blood ties and are thus motivated to search for their biological parents. A study also shows that meetings between the actual parents and adoptees can simplify adoption procedures for both the parties.
