Article Abstract:
Information from the National Survey of Families and Households is used to compare family relationship quality in adoptive, single-mother, two-parent biological, stepmother, and stepfather households. Particular emphasis is placed on adoptive family structures, and implications for adoption policies and theory are addressed.

The effects of parental presence, family change, absence of a biological father, and a single-mother household are all considered with regard to the experiences of Black and White women.
