Economic independence, economic status, and empty nest in midlife marital disruption
Article Abstract:
Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Mature Women were analyzed to elucidate midlife marital disruption. A hazards model was also used to quantify the influence of family life course factors, couple's economic conditions and women's economic dependence on the probability of separation during midlife. The increasing economic independence of women was identified as the major factor affecting divorce. However, college education lowered the probability of divorce during the second decade of marriage and beyond.
