Engendering Motherhood: Identity and Self-Transformation in Women's Lives
Article Abstract:
In the book "Engendering Motherhood," Martha McMahon presents a sociological analysis of the meaning of motherhood and the transformation of identity that occurred for middle-class and working-class Canadian women. McMohan explores the effects of the mothering experience on the gendered identities of the women. She explores the shared meanings and other aspects of the gendered experiences of mothering, such as love and responsibility for children, which brings about identity transformation in women. Her book exposes a paradox, in that motherhood is both a personal and social experience.

Cohabitation, marriage, and entry into motherhood
Article Abstract:
A study of 2,056 women in their first unions and 1,763 married women revealed that married women gave birth to their first children sooner than cohabiting women. Cohabitation directly impacts the speed of marital first births solely among White women, pregnant prior to their wedding. Desires to bear children had no correlations with attitudes to change from live-in to the status of wife among women in general.
