Sickness absence rates average 3.7%
Article Abstract:
UK employees missed an average of 8.4 days of work due to illness during 1996, an increase from 1994's average of 7.8 days a year. As a percentage of working time, these figures represented an increase to 3.7% from 3.4% and an estimated 187 mil work days lost. Non-manual working absenteeism increased to 7.9 days annually, while manual workers' average stayed at 9.7 days. In a survey on absenteeism, many employers cited formal notification procedures as the best way of reducing sick leave abuses, although disciplinary procedures and teamworking were also mentioned as important.
