The evolution of wildlife conservation policies in Kenya
Article Abstract:
Kenya's wildlife conservation policies, which encourage rural peasants and pastoralists to form conservation groups and to participate in income generating wildlife conservation and tourism programs, were developed to win the support of local residents and reduce the growing conflict of interest. However, the conservation groups ended up being controlled by local elites who corrupted tourism revenues. Thus, local residents should also be empowered to limit access to wildlife resources and to protect against intrusion of powerful interest groups.
