Stress, support, and antisocial behavior trait as determinants of emotional well-being and parenting practices among single mothers

Article Abstract:

A study by the Department of Sociology, Iowa State University, of a sample of 209 divorced women shows that single mothers face a higher risk of psychological problems and ineffective parenting than married women. The antisocial behavior trait was positively related to economic uncertainty and crises, and negatively related to quality of parenting and the level of psychological distress.

Married and recently divorced mothers' stressful events and distress: tracing change across time

Article Abstract:

A study looked at the impact of divorce on psychological distress in adult women. This research used data on 188 divorced mothers with teenage children and 306 married mothers. Findings revealed a parallel between depressive symptoms and stressful events. Divorced mothers experienced increased stressful events and depressive symptoms after the divorce, which dropped across the span of three years albeit not to the levels felt by married women.
