Teaching fire safety

Children need to be acquainted with fire safety lessons, even at the young age of 3. Among the lessons that can be taught include how to escape from the house and how to protect themselves during a fire. Parents also need to drill them every six months.

Private funds for public schools

About 1,200 public schools have created private foundations to raise funds for curricula, computers, and special programs. Such foundations raise about $80,000 a year, a relatively small amount that is enough to save a struggling program.
