Social change and declines in marriage and fertility in Eastern Germany
Article Abstract:
A study provided evidence to the hypothesis that unstable economic conditions result in lower marriage and fertility rates. The research found that German unification resulted in East German women avoiding to enter into perceived risky, long-term commitments such as marriage and child-rearing. Since 1989, shifts in the nature of employment and lowered state support for medical care have been causing marriage and birth rates in the new German states to drop.
