Stepfamilies from a historical perspective
Article Abstract:
Stepfamilies have been increasing as a function of the increases in divorce and separation rates. Most are the result of the marriage or cohabitation of mothers and fathers of children whose other parent is still living. In contrast, the incidence and prevalence of stepfamilies in the past were due to the rate of mortality and frequency of remarriage. In pre-industrial Europe, stepfamilies were regarded negatively, suggesting two major effects, namely, the suffering of stepchildren at the hands of stepmothers and conflict between spouses due to conflict between stepparent and stepchild.

Stepfamilies from a legal perspective
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the ways in which stepfamily members promote greater authority over the legal aspects of stepparent-child relationships. The legal issues are associated with economic concerns involving stepparent-child relations, including the financial support of minor children, distribution of real estate assets and custody concerns involving minor stepchildren. Rules of law governing stepparent-child relationships and the manner in which they can be altered in the individual stepfamily are also discussed.

Stepfamilies from a policy perspective: guidance from the empirical literature
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted concerning policy reform recommendations related to the status of stepfamilies in the US. The recommendations revolve around the legal concerns associated with inheritance, stepparent-stepchild relationships and management of finances. Policies affecting stepfamilies may be altered and promoted by developing more effective and sensitive legislation. Results suggested that studies on British policy reform may aid in designing reform policies affecting stepfamilies in the US.
