Strong support but uneasy relationships: coresidence and adult children's relationships with their parents
Article Abstract:
A study examined the impact of coresidence on the relationships between adult children and their parents. Data were collected from interviews with 435 parents in 1988 and with their children in 1992. Findings revealed that coresidents have more supportive relationships with their parents than non-coresident adults, although they maintain less affective relationships. The positive impact of coresidence is felt more strongly if the children are more mature and responsible. Finally, coresidence and proximity were found to be significantly related to parent-child solidarity.
