Structural and assimilationist explanations of Asian American intermarriage

Article Abstract:

Researchers have sought to build on existing studies of Asian American intermarriage, improving them by using a more complete conceptual framework, widening the geographic and population coverage and undertaking a multivariate analysis. It was found that structural assimilation is negatively related to intermarriage, possibly an indication that Asian Americans who out-marry are negatively selected in socioeconomic terms. Asian intermarriage seems to be determined by factors linked with individual assimilation and by factors which operate at community level.

Avenues and barriers to residential mobility among single mothers

Article Abstract:

The attributes of families and their conditions that improve or decrease their chances of moving to better communities were investigated. Individual-level data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and census data depicting the poverty status of single mothers' neighborhoods were analyzed. Findings showed that the chances of transferring to a better environment are increased by marriage and by getting a job. However, their chances are decreased by age and by home ownership.
