The African American family and the U.S. legal system
Article Abstract:
The American legal system impacts greatly on four controversial issues regarding the African American family. These issues are divorce, illegitimacy, public welfare and 'black matriarchy.' Of the four, the last is the hinge on which the other three hang. Ninety percent of African American single-parent households are headed by the woman and she is almost always economically disadvantaged. Most of the social and legal systems designed to help such families have been phased out by the Reagan-Bush administration's federal reforms. Others seem to be designed to perpetuate an oppressive mechanism.

Men and family law: from patriarchy to partnership
Article Abstract:
The patriarchal characteristic of American family laws is undergoing transition. This is revealed in the numerous cases foregrounding gender issues involving equality and individual liberty. Although the law on the whole favors men's rights, there had been numerous instances in which the law disfavors them. Examples of these include child custody, paternity, child and spousal support, rights of unwed fathers, abortion and father rights, and marital and parenting rights of gays. The changes in the laws brought about by these issues are correlated to changes in society's attitude.

The personal safety and well being of children is being threatened due to the increase in conception technologies as well as the desire for a perfect child giving rise to the need of legislative intervention. Abuse, neglect abandonment, and maltreatment of children can be avoided if proper care is taken. Factors that affect the child's safety are circumstances under which conception is achieved, maturity for parenthood and quality of relationship between parents.
