The challenge of cultural blindness: implications for family-focused service delivery
Article Abstract:
Special education professionals dealing with culturally diverse families need to be aware of their own cultural assumptions, those of the families they serve and the challenges to collaborative relationships with these culturally diverse families resulting from cultural blindness. Data from participant observations of a Native American parent support group in a reservation and from qualitative interviews with three mothers and three professionals within this group are used to analyze the implications of cultural blindness for the empowerment of minority families.
