Single parent widows: stressors, appraisal, coping, resources, grieving responses and health

Article Abstract:

The outcome of a spouse's death on a widowed mother depends on a variety of factors. Literature on four types of families is considered: widows with dependent children; widows with handicapped children; independent older widows with healthy children; and dependent, ill older widows with children at home. Complicating factors include stressors, coping, resources, appraisal of bereavement, grieving responses and health. High-risk, vulnerable and healthy characteristics are discussed.

Widowers as single fathers

Article Abstract:

Widowed single fathers are able to provide both economic and emotional support for their children though there is little support for the fathers adopting these roles. Fathers who actively participated in nurturing their children before their spouses' deaths are better able to cope with the dual roles. The necessary roles include child care, helping children deal with grief and socializing children to recognize family values.
