What are families after divorce?
Article Abstract:
Divorce should not be considered as the end of the family but a transitional phase that transforms it into a binuclear family, single-parent family or stepfamily. Since a family exists not as an object or a concrete thing but as a social construction, families after divorce can still be considered a family as long as members think, talk and act as if there is something existing, aside from their biological relationships, that bind them as a family. This implies that the variability in ideologies and material structures and process that constitute a family should be considered to gain a better understanding of what a family is.

Quality of life and well-being of single parent families: disparate voices or a long overdue chorus?
Article Abstract:
The researchers who contributed to the Marriage and Family Review's four volumes on single parenting explicitly or implicitly identify a central theme: the quality of life and well-being of families headed by single parents. Together the articles act as a Greek chorus, explicating and illuminating the action they describe. They thus work in concert, albeit one in need of coordination or direction. The various essays are interpreted in terms of three levels of variables: institutional, interpersonal and individual.

Single parents and wider families in the new context of legitimacy
Article Abstract:
Many single parents are no longer in isolation because of wider support networks composed of non-family members. The increase in single-parent families and the development of support networks needs to be recognized. The social definitions of illegitimacy should be revised to reflect changing family structures.
