Basics: For woven fabrics, it's important to go with the grain

Article Abstract:

The fabric of a cloth depends on the way it is woven and the most important feature of a woven fabric the grain is highlighted. There are two types of grains, the Lengthwise grain, which is also called the warp, is created by yarns woven in fixed, vertical rows and Crosswise grain, which is also called the weft, is created by yarns woven under and over the lengthwise yarns.

New rules for large prints

Article Abstract:

The plan behind arranging pattern pieces on the fabric, ignoring traditional layout rules and accepting modern patterns which give a special look and the general guidelines for positioning super size motifs is discussed. The dos and don'ts for positioning prints on the fabric are given which minimize the rule of wearing matching motifs with bold patterns.

How to pin: Place pins in key areas and use as few as possible

The pin is the key to perfect clothing construction and a few well-placed pins stabilize and control any type of fabric, which results in precise cutting and accurate, frustration-free sewing. Some tips on how to prevent the fabric from getting damaged during pinning, and three areas that require a little extra attention whilst pinning are illustrated.
