A stopgap proposal

Napa Valley, CA, vintners who grow their grapes in the Napa Valley want to impose standards for wine labels so that consumers will know what percentage of the grapes used in the wines were actually grown in Napa Valley. The vintners are taking such action because of the number of bottlers who use inferior grapes from other regions of the state and capitalize on the reputation of Napa Valley wines to sell their products.

Sparkling spectrum

California vineyards offer a variety of sparkling wines at excellent values. Gloria Ferrer brut Carneros Royal Cuvee 1988 was the top-rated sparkling wine in a blind sampling of 49 new releases. Several California wineries are beginning to carry vintage dates on sparkling wines.
