Bullish prices - and a few bargains - at Zachys-Christie's record-breaking sale

A case of 1990 Chateau Latour increased in price by 38%, selling for $8,050, and 1985 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache sold for $9,200 a case, up 30%. A case of 1990 Chateau Auson was a great buy, however, at $2,530. An Apr 25, 1997, Manhattan auction set a sales record.

Bidders both live and on paper enliven Davis sale
Article Abstract:
Davis & Co's Apr 20, 1996 auction registered over $1 million in sales, 90% of which were to mail and fax bids. Big bottles were in demand, with an imperial of Chateau Cheval-Blanc 1949 going for the day's high, $28,600. The collection of Gilbert Berken grossed $315,000.

The very high prices of Californian cult wines achieved at auctions are discussed. The rapid growth in quality and status of such wines, from 1997 onwards, and record prices of cult wines sold at auction from 1998 to 1999 are analysed.
