Christie's Fritz Haton begins new West Coast wine career

Christie's US wine department director, Fritz Hatton, has left his post at the New York-based company, to start his own microwine business in San Francisco, CA. Hatton, who has been a director at Christie's for three years, will remain connected with the company, serving as an international wine consultant and auctioneer. Christie's has started looking for a replacement for Hatton but the position he vacated will temporarily be assumed by Christie's newly appointed head of international wine department, Christopher Burr.

European heat wave leads to record early harvests

Due to the Europe's deadly heat and extended drought, many estates raced to harvest their vineyards when most of the wine makers were on vacation. Vintners predicted excellent quality and varieties that can handle heat well while some cooler-climate grapes suffered, worrying the vintners about the raisined grapes and too-high alcohol levels.
