Cut-price lines promote poor quality and unhealthy foods

Article Abstract:

UK food retailers tend to cut the prices of foods which are high in fat and sugar, according to the Food Commission. Fruit and vegetables tend not to be discounted, and this tends to gear the diet of the poor toward unhealthy foods. Discounted products tend to have poorer nutritional value than other products, with burgers containing meat of poorer quality and pies containing less filling and more pastry. Supermarkets are concerned with price wars rather than with customers' health needs.
