Danisco Sugar invests in Lithuania, Poland

Article Abstract:

The Lithuanian sugar industry produces 89 000 tonnes of sugar from its four factories, with consumption at 32kg per capita. The Danish company Danisco Sugar has purchased stakes in all four Lithuanian sugar factories from Vilniaus Prekyba. Danisco's sugar sales were worth 6.5 billion Dutch kroner, a 1% increase for the year to April 1998. Danisco also has plans to buy a 49% share in the Polish sugar company, Rolimpex Cukier. Danisco sees both investments as part of its expansion into Eastern Europe, where it already sells sugar to the Baltic States and Russia.

Sugar group Ebro angry at the decision of competition authority

Article Abstract:

Spanish sugar producer Azucarera Ebro Agricolas is angry at the national competition authority's ruling that it must restructure because of its dominant 78% share of Spain's sugar market. The authority says that Ebro must reduce its market share to 60% and suggests that the group does not buy sugar, directly or indirectly, within the European Union so that other operators can enter Spain.
