The Far East and in particular Hong Kong saw almost a third of the world's auctioned wine arrive here in the 1990s. Wealthy Hong Kong businessmen had begun to collect some of the world's most expensive wines sometimes to keep, but often to drink.

Hong Kong Vinexpo battles slumping Asian economy
Article Abstract:
The Asian economic slump was untimely for the 1998 wine exhibition Vinexpo, held in June in Hong Kong. The approximately 7,500 visitors were enthusiastic, however. Demand for top wines is still high in Japan.
