Bordeaux was rightly seen as the world's sole repository of great Cabernet and Merlot before 1980s. Bordeaux counts in the marketplace, as it is a symbol and once a product reaches symbol status it is difficult to supplant, but it is possible to topple.

Making a case for it

Issues are presented concerning the changing trend which began in the 1980s to sell higher quality wines by the bottle rather than by the case. The affordability of wine sold by the bottle is discussed.
