Wine auctioneer Michael Davis reported that his Feb 17, 1996, sale of more than 1,400 lots earned a total of $1.2 million and broke several records. Twelve bottles of Chateau Cos-d'Estournel 1990 sold for $1,375, for example, and case of Chateau Clinet 1989 sold for $2,750.

Jefferson's Madeira and more recent wines lead strong New York sale

Article Abstract:

A buyer paid $23,000 for a bottle of 1843 Madeira that once was owned by Pres Thomas Jefferson, and a total of 1,984 lots were sold on May 16 and 17, 1997, at a Sotheby's and Sherry-Lehmann auction in New York. The auction grossed nearly $3 million.

Christie's scores with finest and rarest sale

A Jun 6, 1996, London auction of 978 lots grossed $1.6 million. Chateau Petrus prices were up 50%, and 50 cases of 1961 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou went for an impressive $3,557 per dozen. Several other top wines are also discussed.
