New code of practices proposed for wineries in direct-shipment battle

Article Abstract:

A coalition of wine industry companies known as Free the Grapes! has recommended a new voluntary code of conduct for wineries that ship wine to customers. Shipments would be restricted in states that do not allow such distribution schemes and to verify ages of customers and a method for paying taxes. The group is attempting to be pro active as many states are considering direct shipment laws.

Prices for wine by the glass in New York can be exorbitant, sometimes reaching five times as much as wholesale value. This discourages most consumers from trying new wines and cultivating a wine appreciation. Wine should be accessible to people with a variety of income levels.
