Rioja, SpainEs most prestigious wine region sacrificed grip for smoothness, fruit for oaky flavors, and liveliness for easy drinkability the producers defended this style as traditional. They regard the light, oaky reds of the 1970s and '80s as aberrations, distortions of the authentic Rioja tradition, and now hey are looking to an even earlier era for their models.
