Sara Lee growth continues in third quarter

US-based food and personal products corporation Sara Lee has increased operating profits by 11% and sales by 6% during the third quarter of its 1997-1998 trading year. Sara Lee reported an operating profit of $431 million, with sales of $4.7 billion. The largest increases were reported by the packaged meat and bakery division which increased sales by 4.3% to $1.8 billion, while the coffee and grocery division reported a fall in sales by 0.2% to $683 million during the Q3 of 1997-1998. The fall in coffee prices was caused by a strong dollar against European currencies.

Unigate looking to build on good performance
Article Abstract:
The British dairy and fresh foods supplier Unigate PLC performed well in year to Mar 1997 by making a profit of 129.6 million pounds sterling and aims to continue growth by acquisition in the fresh foods market. Its European food companies achieved total operating profits of 100.9 million pounds sterling. Its chilled products company St Ivel Chilled Products Ltd performed particularly well in yellow fats sales after acquiring the margarine business Kraft Foods.
