There are areas of old-vine Zinfandel in Sonoma, CA as it has been grown in the area since the nineteenth century. The old vines produce a large crop but are difficult to farm because the fruit ripens unevenly.

Getting it (too) ripe

Article Abstract:

The bottlings from the 1999 Zinfandels harvest are high in alcohol and have residual sugar more like that found in a Port. Problems with the wine in the 1980's meant it became unpopular but is now recovering.
