The contrarian collector

Article Abstract:

Richard Thaler is an author, behavioral economist, and partner in an asset management firm. He has also amassed a 1400-bottle wine collection that he has chosen according to his own palate. His economic theory centers around the idea of humans' actions being subject to the whims of their nature, and applies this theory to his own wine-buying. For example, he knows that those who get emotionally involved in bidding on wine in an auction will invariably pay far more than the wine is worth. Therefore, he makes lowball bids via fax, so that when he does win, he has really won.
