Winemakers depend on the quality of their vineyards for good wines. This is illustrated by three different wine makers who have different ambitions for their wines, yet who face the same limitations of wine making. They are Robert Mondavi, Lalou Bize-Leroy, and Alois Lageder of Italy.

The French concept of 'bien eleve' is an abstract notion whose influence extends from wine making to wine tasting. Only wines classified as 'bien eleve' are described as elegant, fine, gentle and polished.
