Static in the channel
Article Abstract:
The grocery industry have experienced a much higher rate of unsaleables (at 1.5% of gross sales) with efficient consumer response (ECR) than the "alternative" formats, warehouse clubs (at .2%) and discounters (at .7%). The failure of retailers to exploit ECR is due to category management, cost-avoidance and information hoarding. For instance, overall efficiencies linked with damaged goods reclamation are taken for granted in the grocery channel when undamaged goods also flow through reclamation centers.
