Most of Tuscany's wine regions have produced just average to good wines in recent years, though a notable exception has been Montalcino, which is producing great wines. The editor's choice selection goes to the outstanding Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino of 1990.

Issues are presented concerning the wines and wine production of the Campania region of southern Italy. The wines from Campania's subregion Irpinia are particularly good. Four red wines from 1997 and one white wine from 1998 are recommended.

A surprisingly good show

The elegance and balance of the 1993 and 1994 Bordeaux vintages brings to mind the 1979 and 1981 vintages of the wine. Over 300 wines were evaluated in Bordeaux, France, in Apr. 1995. Most wines had ripe fruit flavors and smooth textures.
