Seven wineries in California are presented with emphasis on their spectacular 1997 vintages. These wineries include old and new such as the Raymonds in Napa who are fourth-generation winemakers and the Ristows who set up in 1989.

Merlot's soft landing

Issues are presented concerning the quality of the Merlot wines produced in California. The vintages of 1994 and 1997 are particularly fine ones but the wine produced in 1996 and 1998 is also reviewed.
