Almarai: world-class dairy in the desert
Article Abstract:
Almarai has a new $107-million, 50,000-sq-meter world-class dairy processing plant in Saudi Arabia. The facility takes the place and consolidates production from earlier Almarai plants while increasing capacity by twofold. The facility makes fresh milk, aseptically-packaged fresh UHT milk and a broad array of traditional Middle Eastern cultured products such as laban and zabadi. The facility is set up to keep cross-contamination at its lowest. Basic design is composed of three separate modules: services, processing and dry storage. Khalid Al-Molhem, general manager and CEO, said the plant was built with expansion in mind as dairy product consumption increases by 7% to 8% per capita per year.

Reclosable packages zip up snack foods
Article Abstract:
Frito-Lay and Nabisco Biscuit Co. have introduced reasable packaging for select snack products in response to consumer demand. Nabisco employs resealable packaging on its Ritz-brand Snack Mix. The Fresh Trak zipper device, which has ethylene vinyl acetate ribs that act as an adhesive, are provided by Presto Products. Frito-Lay introduced resealable packaging in its 'Super Size' pouches of 18-ounce Ruffles, Lay's and Doritos. To accomodate the plastic zipper on top of the bag, a perforated strip is placed at the top of the pouch which the consumer can tear off.
