Reflections at 50
Article Abstract:
Newspaper designer Mario Garcia reflects on the role of design in newspapers as his way of celebrating his 50th birthday. Garcia enumerates three main reasons why newspaper editors and publishers have changed their attitudes toward design. These are technology, marketing and other media. The advent of the cold type, along with the use of color, marked the beginning of the design revolution in newspaper. Newspaper marketing also shifted to highlight consumer acceptance while the growing popularity of the Internet is viewed by Garcia as a medium that encourages reading.
