A proposal for the establishment of scientific criteria for health claims for functional foods

Article Abstract:

Health claims for foods have grown far beyond the prevention of nutritional deficiencies, and many suggest that foods may be useful in the prevention and treatment of disease. This has created international and cross-cultural challenges to regulate health claims that might be unproven or misleading, while encouraging healthy eating habits. Foods marketed to prevent or cure disease, rather than for nutritional purposes, are likely to be classified as drugs. Consumers would benefit from international criteria on the scientific evidence necessary to claim a health benefit from a food.
