Dietary guidelines for children: where are we heading?
Article Abstract:
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) historically target people equal to or more than two years of age. Nutrient needs and risk for developing chronic diseases vary significantly with age. It has been strongly recommended that dietary guidelines be developed for children and included in the official DGA document for the year 2000. As this process has begun, it will be useful for health professionals to apprise themselves of the direction that dietary guidelines targeting children have taken since 1988 and the opinions of health professionals regarding this matter.

Lowering serum cholesterol: who benefits?
Article Abstract:
Various studies on the benefits of lowering serum cholesterol were reviewed. The Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial, which involved 356,222 primary subjects, showed that serum cholesterol levels are directly proportional to the risk of coronary heart disease mortality. It also showed that risk associated with higher serum cholesterol diminishes with age. Other studies have shown that patients who were not at high risk for coronary heart disease only showed modest gain in life expectancy when serum choelsterol levels are reduced by 5%.
