Behavior of vehicles during tornado winds
Article Abstract:
Vehicles are stable in tornado winds, with most not moved by tornado even at wind speeds of 158-206 mph. According to the first extensive field evaluation of the behavior of vehicles in tornadoes, only about 35% of the vehicles in a sample of 180 were moved by the wind, with no difference in percent of vehicles moved among wind speeds of 73-112 mph, 113-157 mph and 158-206 mph. Only 7% of the vehicles were tipped over by the winds at wind speeds of 73-112 mph and 113-157 mph, while the probability of being tipped rose to only 15% at sites with F3 damage (158-206 mph).
