Environmental influence on the development of childhood immunity
Article Abstract:
Early exposure to pollen, animal epithelia and house dust appears to increase the incidence and risk of allergies later on in life. Studies indicate that season of birth also affects the propensity for allergy development. Development of T-helper cell similar to Th1 is essential to aid in defense against pathogenic micro-organisms, but excessive Th1-like immunity may be associated with autoimmune disease. Prolonged Th2-type responses may increase the propensity of allergic responses.

Malnutrition: causes, consequences, and solutions
Article Abstract:
Many countries face the silent emergency of malnutrition implicated in more than 50% of child deaths worldwide. Survivors are crippled, vulnerable to illness and disabled intellectually. Satisfying immediate hunger may not get rid of malnutrition in a child, but there are many routes to pursue, among them promoting breastfeeding. Of the children who die of malnutrition-related causes, three-quarters are mildly to moderately malnourished and do not show outward signs.

Calcium requirements of children
Article Abstract:
A stable-isotope method for determining the fractional calcium absorption and net retention of 51 five-to-16-year-old American girls and a supplemental study of seven-year-old Chinese children revealed that children need to consume enhanced quantities of calcium through their food for potential health benefits. Further studies, however, are needed to ascertain the long-term benefits of enhanced calcium intake by children.
