Origin and framework of the development of dietary reference intakes

Article Abstract:

The background, purpose, and design of the recently developed Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) values are presented. Concerns raised at a Food and Nutrition Board conference in Jun 1993 led to the appointment of a DRI committee responsible for researching and developing DRI values. DRI values are intended to be more comprehensive and useful in a variety of individual, public, medical, and research settings. Initial DRI development has focused on calcium, fluoride, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin D.

Uses of dietary reference intakes

Article Abstract:

People should exercise care when choosing a set of dietary reference values as dietary guidelines. Appropriate uses and target audiences for each set of dietary guidelines are presented. The Recommended Daily Allowance, Estimated Average Requirements, and Tolerable Upper Intake levels can be most suitable for guiding and assessing individual diet plans. Adequate Intake values are most valuable for assessing narrowly defined population groups.

Dietary reference intakes

Article Abstract:

A comprehensive set of dietary recommendations called Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) values are being developed jointly by Canadian and American task forces. DRI analyses for calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus, fluoride, and magnesium are presented. DRI values incorporate nutritional levels as specified by Recommended Dietary Allowance, Estimated Average Requirement, Tolerable Upper Intake Level, and Adequate Intake recommendations.
