Gamma-tocopherol: an efficient protector of lipids against nitric oxide-initiated peroxidative damage

Article Abstract:

Vitamin E in the form of gamma-tocopherol (gammaT) is a good protector of lipids against nitric oxide-initiated peroxidative damage according to various studies. Both alpha-tocopherol (alphaT) and gammaT inhibited PC-hydroperoxide formation with gammmaT showing greater inhibition at low peroxynitrite concentrations. GammaT is the form of vitamin found most found in the diet and is metabolized more quickly than alphaT. The tocopherols were equally good at preventing oxidation of LDL components. Against nitrogen oxides, both tocopherols may be needed.
