Is increased dietary protein necessary or beneficial for individuals with a physically active lifestyle?

Article Abstract:

Protein requirements may be much higher for people engaged in endurance and strength exercise than previously believed. Daily protein needs may be 150% to 225% above the current recommendations. Although North Americans already consume protein levels close to these values, children, dieters, and vegetarians may not be consuming adequate amounts of protein.

Protein, calories, and immune defenses

Article Abstract:

The influence of dietary protein and energy must be studied to understand protein-energy malnutrition and its influence on the immune system. The need is significant to justify international focus. Evidence indicates that high quality proteins differ in their ability to support the immune system.

Dietary fatty acids and the immune system

Article Abstract:

Amount and type of fat in diets affects the amount and type of eicosanoids. Eicosanoids and PUFAs are potent modulators of lymphocyte and macrophage functions. High levels of lipids containing n-3 PUFAs significantly affect the function of immune system cells.
