Isoprostanes as oxidant stress markers in coronary reperfusion
Article Abstract:
Urine tests for 8-epi-prostaglandin F2 alpha (8-epi-PGF2a) appear to be a useful measurement of tissue stress caused by free radical or oxidative injury. Urine levels of 8-epi-PGF2a have been shown to correspond to free radical reactions occurring as an artery is blocked and then unblocked or when smoking or drinking excessive alcohol. These effects appear to be independent of aspirin metabolism. These tests, however, are as yet impractical to use on a widespread basis.

The role of oxidized low-density lipoprotein in the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma: implications for atherosclerosis
Article Abstract:
Atherosclerosis develops after cholesterol-saturated foam cells deposit themselves into arteries. The molecular basis for this activation involves oxidized low-density lipoproteins that stimulate the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, a fat cell regulatory protein. Researchers were able to demonstrate this aspect of early atherosclerotic process in mice.
